Scholtens maid the majors for the first time in 2023, appearing in 26 games and making 11 starts with a 5.29 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 58 strikeouts in 85 innings pitched. The right-hander ended the season with a calf injury, but will be ready for Spring Training. Old for a rookie at 29, Sholtens will now need to fend off rotation candidate additions in Jared Shuster and Michael Soroka or may be forced back into the bullpen or even a return to Triple-A. If he does crack the rotation the upside here seems hard to find as Scholtens gave up 100 hits and walked 30 batters in 2023 without coming close to a strikeout-per-inning. Read Past Outlooks
