Martin geared up as a reliever during spring training of 2023 but suffered a tendon tear in his right latissimus that required surgery. As such, he didn't pitch last season. It was the second significant injury for Martin, who underwent Tommy John elbow surgery in 2019 that delayed his development. The right-hander hasn't returned to the pre-TJ form he had as a prospect in the Astros system. There is an opening for a fifth starter entering the spring, but it's unclear if Martin will be healthy enough to compete.
