Former first round picks get more leniency than most, but the Astros gave up on Whitley after five appearances in 2025 after watching him allow 10 earned runs in 7.1 innings of work. Whitley was designated for assignment because he was out of options and the Astros eventually traded him to the Rays for (not Kevin) cash considerations. Whitley had some immediate brief success with the Rays before he went on to allow six earned runs without recording an out against Detroit, and then four more runs in his final inning of work with the club on 6/27. Whitley was released, cleared waivers, and reported to Durham where he finally found some success pitching to a 2.60 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP with a 21.7% K-BB in 55.1 innings with the Bulls. The Rays were tweaking Whitley's repertoire to focus on a north/south approach to the zone encouraging him to throw a cutter with more regularity so the 2025 season was more of a learning curve. Whitley still has his velocity and could compete for a spot at the back of the rotation or a swing role out of the pen since he is still out of options. Read Past Outlooks
