Severino settled for a one-year, "pillow" contract from the Mets last offseason and went on to make 30-plus starts for the first time since 2018. The right-hander incorporated a sinker as one of his primary pitches for the first time in his career and also mostly ditched his slider in favor of a sweeper. The pitch mix change resulted in just a 21.2 percent strikeout rate, although in his final 13 starts between the regular season and playoffs he upped that rate to 24.8 percent. If Severino is now more willing to sacrifice swings and misses for contact earlier in counts, it could make him more of a floor than a ceiling play, and one with a spotty track record of durability and consistency.
