Closer Watch - A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (also check out our Closer Grid)
New York (AL) – Boone Logan and Luis Ayala couldn't hold it together in a four-run game against Cincinnati on Monday night, so with two on and nobody out in the ninth, manager Joe Girardi summoned closer Mariano Rivera. With two runners on and the tying run on deck, it was a save situation for the ageless great despite the four-run lead. Rivera allowed both inherited runners to score, but he managed to escape with the save.
Tampa Bay – Manager Joe Maddon went to closer Kyle Farnsworth with two outs in the eighth inning and his team up by five runs in Monday's game. Although it wasn't a save situation, Maddon left his closer in to finish out the ninth. Farnsworth should remain available the rest of the week - a day off Thursday will allow him to get his requisite rest.

Recommended Pickup
Mike Adams, P, SD - There are winners in waiver-wire scrambles for closers, such as those who ended up with Jordan Walden early this season. But there are also losers – specifically anybody who has tried to speculate on whatever the heck is going on with the Dodgers' bullpen. Instead of gambling on a no-name that gets thrust into the closer role, take a look at a guy like Adams. He's dominating in ERA (1.39), strikeouts (9.5 K/9) and WHIP (0.65), making him useful even if he doesn't get save opportunities. And, with just over a month to go until the trade deadline and the Padres well out of the race, Heath Bell could be out of town at a moment's notice. If/when that happens, Adams could take over the ninth-inning role for the Padres and become the single most valuable reliever in fantasy baseball.
