Closer Watch

New York Mets: After he was tacked with the loss upon allowing the go-ahead run in Monday's loss to the Giants, Jenrry Mejia admitted to experiencing back tightness during the outing. It sounds like it's just a minor blemish for Mejia, as manager Terry Collins announced prior to Tuesday's game that the right-hander was fine. Look for Mejia to pick up any save chances that arise during the team's series with the Nationals, but should he incur a setback, Jeurys Familia would likely be the first reliever to step into closing duties.

Recommended Pickup

Kennys Vargas, 1B/DH, MIN -- While not nearly the most heralded prospect in a stacked Twins farm system, Vargas may be the most interesting of the organization's young hitters that ends up matriculating to the majors this season. Concerns about Vargas' lack of foot speed and poor defense have resulted in a slow climb through the system for the 24-year-old, but he's shown top-notch power at just about every stop. At 6-foot-5 and 275 pounds, the switch-hitting Vargas slugged 17 homers and 17 doubles while trimming his strikeout rate to a palatable 16.8 percent over 97 games at Double-A New Britain, and should receive a lengthy look from the Twins in their DH spot, with Kendrys Morales now in Seattle. Entering play Tuesday, Vargas was off to a productive start in his brief taste of the majors, going 5-for-14 with three runs and four RBI over his first three games. With power on the waiver wire often a scarce commodity, Vargas would seem to represent a high-quality addition to AL-only and deeper mixed league rosters for the season's final two months.
