Closer Watch

Houston -- After he was sidelined with a hip injury since Sept. 6, Chad Qualls returned to the closer's role Tuesday vs. the Indians, notching his 18th save in a scoreless ninth inning. Qualls (3.51 ERA, 1.19 WHIP) has faded considerably during the second half, but it looks as though he still has enough job security to hang on to the closer's gig, especially with less than two weeks remaining in the season. Those holding on to Josh Fields and Tony Sipp in pursuit of saves can probably comfortably let go of both guys in most leagues, though Fields may have an even better shot than Qualls at entering 2015 as the Astros' closer, due to his magnificent 70:17 K:BB ratio over 54.2 innings.

Philadelphia -- Jonathan Papelbon is enjoying another excellent season with 37 saves and a 2.10 ERA over 64.1 innings, but he lost his composure during a rare blown opportunity Sunday vs. the Marlins. After he was rocked for four runs on four hits, a walk and a wild pitch, Papelbon made a lewd gesture to the fans upon leaving the mound, resulting in his ejection. The incident also attracted the attention of the commissioner's office, which announced Monday night that Papelbon would be suspended for seven games. With Papelbon unavailable until next Tuesday, any save opportunities that arise would likely go to either Ken Giles or Jake Diekman. Giles would seem to be the presumptive favorite based on his incredible numbers this season, as the rookie has ridden his blazing fastball to a 1.08 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 60 strikeouts over 41.2 innings.

Recommended Pickup

A.J. Pollock, OF, ARI -- You'll be forgiven if you overlooked the return of Pollock to the Diamondbacks amidst the wave of call-ups and activations at the beginning of September, but his performance since rejoining the team is quickly drawing notice. After missing the previous three months while recovering from a broken hand, Pollock has quickly picked up where he left off during a first half in which he slashed .316/.366/.554 with six homers and eight stolen bases. Since coming back, Pollock has gone 11-for-38 (.289) with a homer, seven RBI and four steals, providing one of the few bright spots in a dismal season for the Diamondbacks. He could offer a similar spark to any fantasy league he remains available in over the final two weeks.

Other Recent Recommendations: Juan Uribe, Clay Buchholz, Gregor Blanco, Jose Ramirez and Leonys Martin
