Closer Watch

Athletics -- Though a save opportunity didn't materialize Monday for the Athletics (this piece was posted before Tuesday's contest was concluded), manager Bob Melvin did pass along some surprising news regarding his closer situation. With Sean Doolittle (oblique) landing on the 15-day DL on Sunday, it was expected that top setup man Luke Gregerson would simply slide up to the ninth-inning role. Instead, Melvin indicated he preferred to keep Gregerson and Ryan Cook in their familiar middle relief roles, with Eric O'Flaherty now looking like the top option for saves. A dominant setup man in his own right with the Braves from 2010-2012, O'Flaherty lost most of last season to Tommy John surgery, but seems to have recovered just fine. He carries a 1.26 ERA and 0.90 WHIP over 14.1 innings since joining the Athletics in early July, and could represent an elite closing option over the next few weeks if he indeed sticks in the role.

Recommended Pickup

Jorge Soler, OF, CHC -- On the heels of the promotions of Arismendy Alcantara and Javier Baez to the big leagues, Soler is the latest of the Cubs' bumper crop of hitting prospects to join the party. After going 8-for-12 with two homers, seven RBI and three walks over his last three games at Triple-A Iowa, the Cubs determined the 21-year-old had little left to prove in the minors. Soler might not have the power-hitting potential of Baez or Kris Bryant (who could join the Cubs in September), but he's shown a keener eye at the plate that should allow him to sustain a more respectable batting average. Over time, Soler projects to be an annual threat for 20 homers and 20 stolen bases, and while those numbers might not arrive in the majors right away, his prospect pedigree and physical gifts make him worth a look across most formats. The Cubs didn't promote Soler to the big leagues to sit, so expect him to displace Justin Ruggiano and Ryan Sweeney for regular at-bats in right field the rest of the way.
