Closer Watch

San Diego -- With the news Tuesday that Joaquin Benoit would be sidelined for at least another eight-to-10 days while he recovers from shoulder soreness, Kevin Quackenbush's hold on the closer's role just got a little bit longer. The right-hander was stellar in notching his second save of the season Monday against the Diamondbacks, striking out the side to help the Padres claim the victory. Those still looking to make up ground in the saves category should go out and grab Quackenbush without hesitation if he's still available.

Recommended Pickup

Maikel Franco, 3B, PHI -- That list of call-ups above is very long and unwieldy, so let me try and save you some time. By and large, most of those players on that list will end up pitching very few innings or log very few at-bats, negating any fantasy value they might have the rest of the way. However, if you've still got a high waiver priority or a good chunk of money left over in FAAB bidding, Franco might be the one player most worthy of breaking the bank. Aside from perhaps Joc Pederson, no September call-up seems to have a brighter long-term fantasy outlook than Franco. But unlike Pederson, who is still buried on the Dodgers' outfield depth chart, Franco's path to playing time in the near-term is clearer. With only the uninspiring Cody Asche to battle him for third-base duties, Franco figures to assume at least a timeshare at the position, after he made his MLB debut Tuesday, going 0-for-3 with an RBI. Though he didn't have the monstrous season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley many expected, Franco is still regarded by talent evaluators as having one of the best power tools in the minors, and he could offer immediate home run upside with the Phillies. Based on raw potential alone, it makes sense to take a chance on Franco at a position that doesn't have an abundance of useful players on the waiver wire.
