Closer Watch

New York Mets - Bobby Parnell notched his first save of the 2015 campaign Tuesday, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings on one hit while striking out two against the Blue Jays. The 30-year-old spent most of 2014 and the start of 2015 on the disabled list, but finally returned to major league action Saturday. He's now tossed two scoreless outings to begin his season, but his fastball has seen a marked drop in velocity to 91-92 from his mid-to-high 90s heat of old. While he may pitch in late-inning situations, Jeurys Familia has grasped the closer role, and should remain the top option in the role moving forward, with Parnell just seeing an occasional opportunity.

St. Louis Cardinals - With Trevor Rosenthal unavailable Monday, Kevin Siegrist picked up his second save of the season, pitching a clean ninth inning while striking out a batter and allowing no baserunners. Rosenthal was once again unavailable Tuesday, likely indicating he's suffering from an injury of some sort. While the extent of the injury remains unclear as of the writing of this article, it seems Siegrist would once again be in line for the save should an opportunity arise. However, Rosenthal will likely remain the Cardinals' primary closer when healthy.

Recommended Pickup

Byron Buxton, OF, MIN - Buxton was long considered the top prospect in the minors, but multiple injuries derailed his 2014 season and prevented him from being recalled late in the season. However, the star prospect once again flashed his potential in 2015, batting .283/.351/.489 with six home runs, 37 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 59 games at Double-A Chattanooga. Injuries that sent both Jordan Schafer and Aaron Hicks to the disabled list finally forced the Twins to play their hand with Buxton, and the club recalled him following Saturday's game. He collected his first hit in Monday's game, a triple, and scored the winning run in his MLB debut Sunday. If he can continue to display his skills at the major league level, it may be tough to unseat him and send him back to the minors even after the others return. While he may be owned in many leagues, but if available, he's worth a pickup in most leagues.
