Closer Watch

Washington Nationals – Rafael Soriano allowed two home runs Friday and blew his seventh save of the year. Consequently, he has been temporarily removed from the closer's role. Manager Matt Williams told MASN Sports on Saturday that the team will go wihout a set closer for the forseeable future. Soriano will reportedly receive an extended rest and could rejoin the bullpen with lower-leverage work when he returns to the mound. The emphasis for Soriano in the short term is to work on his mechanics, and he will throw a bullpen session in the coming days. In his absence, Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen are the two most interesting candidates to receive save opportunities. Both have had strong seasons and could be incredibly helpful in racking up some saves while maintaining excellent ratios over the final three weeks of the season.

Brock Holt, UTIL, BOS – The ultimate super-utility player, it is no secret that Holt is eligible at every position other than catcher. What may come as a surprise to fantasy owners, however, is that Holt – who developed a reputation of being a jack of all trades, master of none – has recently emerged as a legitimate threat on the base paths. In the last two weeks, Holt has as many steals (5) as anyone in baseball not named Billy Hamilton or Ben Revere. His peripherals have taken a hit over the same period, but he remains a run-scoring machine. Despite an ugly on-base percentage of .258 over the last 14 days, he has scored 12 runs for a non-contending team. Holt is currently battling a bout of dizziness, but once he returns to the field, he is a must add as an emergency replacement for a fallen star at any position.
