Closer Watch

Minnesota Twins – Glen Perkins worked a scoreless ninth for the save yesterday and remains entrenched as closer in Minnesota. As long as the Twins maintain their current pace – they are six games over .500 – that is unlikely to change before the July 31 trade deadline. If, however, Minnesota stumbles stumbles between now and then, stranger things have happened than the team that currently sits in the final playoff spot in the American Legaue trading away a veteran reliever. Should that happen, the Twins lack a lock-down setup man who would be a natural fit for the closer's role. Recent callup Alex Meyer still appears to be headed for a long-term spot in the team's rotation, but may possess the best stuff to replace Perkins if something were to happen to him. Keep an eye on the 25-year-old right hander. For now, he occupies a low-leverage role in a bullpen that has a clear ninth-inning option, so he isn't worth an add. As quickly as things change around the league, though, any live arm at the big league level is worth monitoring.

Recommended Pickup

Steven Matz, SP, NYM – The Mets have suddenly formed the nucleus of a dynamic young rotation. Matz joins a group that already includes Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler. It seems almost inexplicable, given where the franchise stood just a few short years ago, but the team from Queens is a game over .500, just 2.5 games back of the Giants in a wide-open Wild Card race. It is into that scene the young left-hander steps to make his ML debut. In 15 games this season, Matz is 7-4 with a 2.19 ERA and 94 strikeouts at Triple-A Las Vegas. Pitching in a hitter-friendly league, the 24-year-old – who was rated the 33rd best prospect in the Mets farm system – has continued the success he found each level along the way. Through 365 total minor league innings, his ERA has not climbed above 2.62 and a 9.4 K rate indicates remarkable potential. If he is still available in your league, the smart move is to grab him and plug him into the lineup today.

Other Recent Recommendations:Welington Castillo, Justin Turner, Randal Grichuk, Robbie Ray, Erasmo Ramirez and Marlon Byrd.
