Closer Watch

Detroit Tigers - Following the team's trade of former closer Joakim Soria, Alex Wilson notched his first save of the season Thursday. In doing so, the 28-year-old set down five of the six batters he faced over 1.2 scoreless frames. There still remains some question about who will earn the role long-term between Wilson, Bruce Rondon and Al Alburquerque, Wilson's performance on the mound Thursday should leave a good impression. The situation will likely sort itself out over the next few weeks, but Wilson appears to have an edge over the other two at this point.

Colorado Rockies - Following another blown save Thursday against the Cardinals, John Axford was officially removed from the closer role Friday. The Rockies didn't name a closer-to-be, but Rafael Betancourt, Tommy Kahnle and Justin Miller headline the favorites for the role. This is another situation that should sort itself out over the next couple weeks, but this one is a little less clear-cut than even the Tigers' situation.

Recommended Pickup

Alex Wilson, RP, DET - As stated above, Wilson appears the favorite to take over as the closer for the Tigers. While the team did trade away a big piece in Yoenis Cespedes Friday, the core group of players still supports a fair number of wins in the remaining months of the season. While he doesn't boast big strikeout numbers (just 33 strikeouts in 55.1 innings), he should be in line to pick up a fair number of saves, and should help lower ERA and WHIP numbers. For that reason, he's worth at least a flier for now, with the potential to hold onto him if he does indeed maintain the closer role.

Other Recent Recommendations:Jackie Bradley Jr., Aaron Hicks, Arodys Vizcaino / David Aardsma, Rusney Castillo and Ryan Zimmerman
