Closer Watch
Blue Jays - The activation of Casey Janssen from the disabled list Sunday is a welcome relief to a closing situation that has resembled a revolving door in 2014. After enduring a sore shoulder throughout spring training, optimism abound regarding his readiness for the regular season until a sudden blow, a strained lower back, pushed him to the DL. His stint was delayed further due to a setback in mid-April, and in the meantime, the likes of Sergio Santos (now on the DL due to forearm tightness), Brett Cecil, and Aaron Loup were tasked with save chances, combining for nine successes in 14 chances. With few viable options, Janssen is all but assured the job, despite manager John Gibbons' unwillingness to name Toronto's main fireman. Although a save opportunity didn't arise Sunday, the combination of Janssen's successful rehab assignment -- he held the opposition scoreless on four hits and no walks to go with three strikeouts in four frames between High-A Dunedin and Double-A New Hampshire -- and his mates lack thereof should afford him the role right off the bat.

Recommended Pickup
Gerardo Parra, OF, ARI - Since last taking a seat on Apr. 22, which doubled as the floor (.244) of his batting average this season, Parra has reached base in 17 of the last 18 games. He mostly sprays singles about the field, as evidenced by a career-high 53.2 percent groundball rate and a .305 BABIP that's in line with his career mark (.325). Although power has emerged of late -- two homers and a triple in his last 12 at-bats -- his opponent Monday, Jordan Zimmermann, is proficient at keeping the ball in the park, with a career 0.86 HR/9. On the other hand, Parra's career line against Zimmermann -- .250/.308/.333 with one double, one walk, and one RBI in 13 plate appearances -- should aid the outfielder in upholding his end of the bargain at the plate, especially in the friendly confines of Chase Field.
